Furnaces

Furnace repair and installation in Yakima

Gas and electric furnaces, from a tripped ignition on a January night to a new system sized for the whole house.

Chapter 01

What a failing furnace looks, sounds and smells like

Start with the flame. A furnace burning right holds a steady blue pilot flame. Yellow or flickering flames mean improper combustion and a possible carbon monoxide problem, and that one is an emergency call, not a wait-and-see.

The rest are easier to live with for a day or two, which is how a small fault becomes a January breakdown. The furnace will not turn on, or will not hold temperature. It cycles on and off. The blower will not start or will not stop. The main burner will not ignite, the thermostat is dead, or the filter is clogged solid.

Strange noises and bad smells belong on the list too, along with a worn blower belt or bearings, blocked venting and a cracked heat exchanger. If you can name it from that list, you already know more than most people on the first call.

How ACT works a furnace call

The van arrives with the diagnostic equipment and the common repair parts, so the job has a fair chance of ending on the first visit. Our NATE-certified technicians work gas and electric furnaces of any brand and model, and we do certified warranty service on Trane, American Standard and Mitsubishi Electric equipment.

Installing a new one is design work before it is hardware. We size the furnace for the house, build tight, leakproof ductwork, and get the electrical, the gas and the venting right, because that is where improper sizing or installation turns into wiring faults, gas leaks and carbon monoxide.

We recently installed an American Standard gas furnace in Ellensburg with a zoning system, so everyone in the house is comfortable, whatever their preference. Electric furnaces suit buildings with no gas service: no fuel delivery, no pilot light, and no combustion to vent.

Chapter 03

Repair or replace, and the fall check that settles it

Repair or replace is a number, not a feeling, and the number is age and what the next repair costs.

Our rule of thumb: furnaces last 15 to 20 years, and once yours is in that range, or the repair bill reaches about half the price of a new unit, replacement usually wins. We will give you both numbers and let you decide.

A fall inspection is the cheap way to find out where you stand. We check ignition, exhaust and the heat exchanger before the cold arrives, in Yakima, Union Gap, Zillah, Ellensburg, Cle Elum and the rest of the valley. Cold nights outside business hours are covered too, around the clock.

From a customer

“The entire crew at ACT is very knowledgeable and professional. When my furnace went out, they were out the same day and had it working in no time. I would recommend them to anyone for either residential or commercial repair or installation! This young company is giving the established ones a run for their money! Josh and Lindsey....you guys are great.”

Furnace questions, answered

A healthy furnace burns a steady blue flame. A yellow or flickering one points to improper combustion and possible carbon monoxide. Treat it as an emergency and call us.

Yes. We maintain natural gas, propane, oil, electric and dual-fuel heating systems, and we also service boilers, heat pumps and ductless heating.

A rule of thumb we use: consider replacing a furnace that is 15 to 20 years old, or any time repairs add up to about half the cost of a new one. A single failure, such as a cracked heat exchanger, can be the tipping point.

Fall, before the first cold snap. A pre-season inspection and safety check finds ignition, venting and heat exchanger problems while an appointment is easy to get.
